Botox: Background

BOTOX® is a Prescription Medicine containing 100 units of botulinum toxin type A for injection. It is registered for the use in    the treatment of frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals.
BOTOX®, is manufactured by Allergan Inc., belongs to a class of drugs called botulinum toxins, which derive from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Strange as it sounds, this is actually a very similar source of many common medicines, such as penicillin and other antibiotics, which derive from mould.

BOTOX® was first adapted to treat medical conditions, but today is best known for its cosmetic use.  BOTOX® injection is gaining popularity because it is a simple, effective and low-risk way of reducing deep facial wrinkles without the need for surgery. In addition, it keeps the muscles immobile for several months, so people often lose the habit of frowning or squinting. This helps prevent the lines from coming back.

Botox®: Medical uses

The bacterium produces a protein that blocks the release of acetylcholine, which normally transmits messages from the nerves to the muscles to make them contract and move. Once transmission has been blocked, muscles relax, providing relief to patients with overactive muscles, reducing spasms and pain.
In New Zealand, It is approved for use in treating neck muscle spasm in adults (spasmodic torticollis), blepharospasm in adults, leg muscle spasm in children with cerebral palsy and hemi-facial spasm. In addition, Botox is approved for the treatment of strabismus, glabellar lines and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) of the axillae.

Botox: Side Effects & Safety

As with any medication, potential side effects of BOTOX® do exists, and vary according to injection site, dose, frequency of injections, and the amount of physician expertise. Possible side effects— such as pain, tenderness, or bruising at the injection site—are temporary and occur within a few days after treatment. Less common side effects include headaches, nausea and local muscle weakness including eyelid or eyebrow droop.  In general, when used at recommended doses by skilled physicians, BOTOX® is safe and is not known to cause any long-term side effects.

How does Botox® treatment work?

Day to day you make  face expressions when you frown or squint, you tense muscles in your face, forming deep creases (dynamic wrinkles) in your forehead and around your eyes. These movements are often habitual and frequent, resulting in fixed (static) wrinkles. BOTOX® works by preventing the injected muscles from receiving the nerve signals that tell you to tense. With prolonged use, this weakens the muscles, reducing wrinkles and in time the habit of frowning may even diminish.

BOTOX®doesn't affect your ability to feel sensation, so after an injection, though you can't tense the muscle, the skin feels normal when touched. While BOTOX ® is taking effect you may experience unfamiliar sensations and may notice wrinkles you hadn’t previously. As time passes, the ability to move the muscle returns.

How long does Botox® take to work?

After the injection, it takes 3-4 days for the BOTOX® treatment to begin taking effect and about 7 days to see the full effect.  The dose recommended for the treatment will vary depending on the individual and the severity of the lines. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last between 3-4 months. Individual results may vary.

What does Botox® treatment involve?

BOTOX® treatment is a non-surgical procedure whereby a small amount of BOTOX® is administered into selected facial muscles by our trained medical professionals using a very fine needle.  Generally, BOTOX® treatment takes around 10-20 mins which includes a full pre treatment medical consultation and aftercare information.  Discomfort is minimal and brief, and no anaesthetic is usually required.  The injection may sting for a few seconds but normal activities can be resumed straight after treatment.

Does Botox® treatment cause more wrinkles to form?

BOTOX® will relax the facial muscles that cause dynamic expression lines.  It does not cause more wrinkles to form.  If you choose not to have further BOTOX® treatments your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles will gradually revert to their pr-treatment levels

Will I still be able to make facial expressions?

Although the results are visible, a treatment with BOTOX® will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines between the brows is temporarily reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows.  This will give you a more rejuvenated and softer appearance and help you “look as young as you feel”.
